Local Number Portability

Under the Federal Communications Commission’s “local number portability” (LNP) rules, so long as you remain in the same geographic area, you can switch from a wireless, wireline, or VoIP provider to any other wireless, wireline or VoIP provider and retain your existing phone number(s).

However, If you are moving from one geographic area to another, you may not be able to take your number with you.

To keep your existing phone number when switching providers:

  • Do not terminate your service with your existing provider before initiating service with the prospective new provider.
  • First, contact the new provider and request that your number be ported. The new provider, will start the process of porting your number by contacting your current provider. Be prepared to provide the new provider with your 10-digit phone number, customer account number, and five-digit zip code. If you had created a password to protect your account, you may also need to provide that password.
